Baba Soorat Singh Ji

Baba Ji was the third mukhi of damdami Taksal . Baba ji studied from Baba Mani Singh ji.

 

Sant Giani Soorat Singh Ji was born in the village of Chanyot, District Jhang (now in Pakistan). Baba Ji’s father’s name was Sri Ram Chand Ji, who was renamed Jathedar Bhai Ram Singh Ji when initiated into the Sikh nation upon taking Amrit. Jathedar Ram Singh Ji studied Gurbani from Shaheed Bhai Sahib Bhai Mani Singh Ji and propagated the teachings of Sikhi throughout Jhang.

The Rulers minister in the area disliked what Bhai Soorat Singh ji was doing, so along with his family he relocated to Amritsar.

Sant Giani Soorat Singh Ji did spend some time in the Sangat of Satguru Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji and in fact, accepted the boon of Amrit from Guruji. Giani Ji was also taught about Gurmat by Shaheed Bhai Mani Singh Ji (First Chief of Amritsar Taksal) and Shaheed Baba Gurbaksh Singh Ji (Second Chief of Damdami Taksal). They were highly regarded and respected for being a great scholar in Sikhi. Baba Ji had great knowledge in the language of Gurmukhi, Sanskrit, Farsi, Urdu, and Hindi. Baba Ji spent a lot of time at Amritsar teaching Gurbani Santhia (the correct pronunciations of Gurbani) and doing Katha (Gurbani discourse) daily for the Sangat.

Sant Giani Soorat Singh Ji wrote some Pothis (Book of Gurbaani with meaning) of the Katha, they had heard from Bhai Mani Singh Ji. They also wrote a Sateek (translations into Punjabi) of the Vaars of Bhai Gurdas Ji. Baba Ji was an ocean of knowledge, being a great scholar and a great Gursikh of our Sikh history.
